Learn to dance this autumn 21 September to 1 November 2025

Fusion fundamentals

A 6 week partner dance course for new and experienced partner dancers to learn techniques, embody concepts, and develop nuance.

Key info

  • Venue: St Werburgh's Community Centre
  • Dates: 21st September - 1st November, (one week off for Microscope, no class on 5th October)
  • Timings:  Sundays 2 - 5pm, with the final Saturday 3-6pm
  • The format: 2 classes + Practica every week

The course

We'll be covering a different topic each week, with an overview class to help you ground in the basic concepts of the theme, followed by a deeper dive to refine your technique.

  • WEEK 1 (21/9) - Posture & connection points
  • WEEK 2 (28/9) - Frame
  • WEEK 3 (12/10) - Tone
  • WEEK 4 (19/10) - Ways of walking
  • WEEK 5 (26/10) - Creating momentum
  • WEEK 6 (1/11)- Rhythm and style

All classes are open to everyone, though if you are a newer dancer and want to jump straight into the deeper dive you should be prepared to be kept on your toes!

Structure of the day

Each week, we will have a pair of classes with a short break in between and a practica at the end.

  • 1 hour overview class
  • 15 minute relaxed social time/mini-practice
  • 1 hour deep dive class
  • 45 minute practica

Whether you come to one class or two, we encourage you to join in with the practica! This is a chance for you to practice what you’ve learnt in a relaxed environment, and spend some time with the community.

There is a BYO cafe space in the centre, so if you want to come to the overview class and then hang out until the practica you’re welcome.

Who's it for?

We’ve designed the course to be for everyone - whether you’ve been dancing fusion for two weeks or two years, you’re welcome here.

You can choose your own adventure, with two classes on each topic, an overview and a deep dive which you can mix-and-match depending on your confidence with the topic, or your learning style.

The syllabus is based on Flouer Evelyn and Mark Carpenters concept of “modes” of partner dancing: that within every part of the dance there are choices you can make in your technique to adapt to the music and your partner.

If you’re new to dancing, we’ll help you build a solid foundation of partnered technique to help you on the social floor. If you’re ready to explore more, then the classes will help you build up your range in layers so that you can start switching fluidly between modes as you dance.

Overview vs deep dive

The overview classes will start from scratch and be suitable for people who are completely new to partner dancing, want to branch out from their main style, or enjoy more time to embody concepts.

The deep dive will be a chance to nerd out, get more specific with technique, experiment, and develop nuance. Suitable for dancers with some experience of at least one style of partner dancing, or new dancers who do the overview class and enjoy being challenged.

End-of-course party

Our final classes of the course are a little bit different. Instead of an overview and a deep dive, we’ll have an hour each on two different topics, followed by a social dance.

We throw a party on the first Saturday of the month, and we’ve arranged it so that you can come to class, take a little break for dinner locally, and then return for an extra-long 4 hours of social dancing to put it all into practice!

If you sign up for the full course, the final party is free! Otherwise we’ll send you a discount code for the party if you get a drop-in ticket to the final classes.

Sign up from 1st September

We have two options for you to choose from: the full course, or drop-in classes.

Full course

This gives you access to all the classes every week, with bonus free entry to our end-of-course party on Saturday 1st November. That's 12 hours of classes, 6 hours of practice time and 4 hours of social dancing in one pass!

Save money compared to drop-in classes and get a bonus party at the end, win-win.

Full course tickets drop Monday 1st September!

Drop-in

For the non-committal and over-committed, we also have the option of drop-in passes. These allow you to access one or two classes on any given week, plus the practica.

Just so you know, each week’s classes will be drawing on things from previous weeks so while drop-ins are welcome the more consistently you can attend the more you’ll get out of it.

If you select the drop-in option to the final classes on 1st November, we’ll also send you a discount link for the end-of-course party in the evening.

Drop-in passes will be available right here 1 week before each class.
